Sunday June 2nd
Dear Family and Friends,
Hello from the Captain and Mate of the Interlude! We are now tied to the Y. C. guest float here in Nanaimo. We arrived here from Ladysmith yesterday afternoon. It was a sunny but windy two hour trip. The boat was clean before we started but because of some bumpy water it arrived with salt spots and smears and the grit that goes with it. This morning I gave it a bath and now it sparkles again.
At my last writing were anchored at Telegraph Harbour. We spent five nights there at this well protected anchorage. One day the four of us walked to the local ferry landing and took the ferry to Chemainus, about a 25 min. trip. Chemainus is a small town on Vancouver Island. We came back several hours later.
Yesterday was our second week anniversary since we left Blaine. In the past two weeks of travel, yesterday was the first time that we ventured north above the 49th parallel. Both Blaine and Ladysmith are located exactly on the 49th parallel. I guess that means that our trip north must have started yesterday instead of two weeks earlier. Although we have been in Canada and visited several ports-of-call, they were all west and south of our starting point until we left Ladysmith.
When the Interlude and Lady Sandie arrived at Ladysmith on Thursday, we were greeted by a friendly gentlemen, who while working on his boat, had seen us approaching. This gentleman’s name was Dave Trevorrow, born in England, and currently the Ladysmith Yacht Club Commodore. He helped us tie up and then offered to drive us around town and point out the places of interest. Sandie, Linda and I took him up on his offer. The downtown is about a mile from the Ivy Green Marina where we were moored. We spent two nights there and did some of the same things that we did while in Ganges. On Friday evening the four of us, in John’s little boat, went across Ladysmith Harbour and had a nice dinner at Page Point Resort. The restaurant there had been recommended to us.
Yesterday was the day that John and Sandie received a call from Colorado informing them that they will be grandparents for the first time. Their son Mike and his wife, Heather, are expecting next February. This was very exciting news for them.
Although we hadn’t planned to come to Nanaimo quite this soon, it became a priority yesterday. Lady Sandie’s generator stopped working. John needed to go to were he could get it worked on and also have sufficient dock power until it was fixed.
Tomorrow the four of us are invited to go to Dick and Pat Bond’s, (friends in Nanaimo), for dinner and, I am sure, cards. This should be a fun time. We will probably have everyone come here to our boat before we leave Nanaimo.
At this writing all systems aboard the Interlude are operating well. Last night I ran the inverter through its equalizing cycle. It is good to have dock power for this job because it takes eight hours.
Linda and I are looking forward to having some of you come and join us this summer. I am sure that we can show you a good time.
All
for now,
Spence and Linda
